Go West, Young Man

I always get a certain feeling of inspirational largess when traveling about the American West. The region's spaciousness sparks a sense of adventure, and makes me think that anything is possible.

". . . For purple mountains' majesty, above the fruited plain. America, America, God shed His grace on thee. And crown Thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea." Seeing the Tetons (just north of Jackson, Wyoming) makes believers of all. They are purple. They are majestic. And inspirational.

Another sign: "Mile High" on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. My left hand is just above the marker in this picture. But it was a hard picture to get. Oh, everyone knows that Denver is the "Mile High City," but just ask any resident where one might find a sign proclaiming it - at the exact elevation. Most just shake their heads. Some might say inside Mile-High Stadium, but that facility is generally closed. Finally, on the fifth or sixth trip, someone told to go to the Capitol, that there was a marker on the steps. I found it!

The Grand Canyon. Everyone should see it at least once. This particular shot was made late one afternoon from the touristy South Rim, and, yes, the colors change by the minute as the sun slowly sets. We toured other parts of the Canyon the next day, and bored, cut our visit a day short and made a mad dash back to Vegas to have some real fun.

Limousines are often faster - sometimes cheaper, too - than cabs. If you opt to hire one, agree on a rate up front. Be advised, however, that some "limo drivers" are unregulated freelancers who might not be insured. When in doubt, ask to see their medallion or license.
